  • My Grandparents built this airstrip and camp in the 70's. My grandfather died in a plane crash in the mid 80's. At which time my father and i took over the camp. It was a nice set up. Airplane hangers, two story cabin built by a general contractor(my grandpa). With an addition buit right before he died. At one point drug runners crashed a plane on the airstrip and ransacked the place, stealing guns, swamp buggies, and a three wheeler. Spent most of our summers out there. Loved every minute. It's sad to see the place burnt down.
  • To add to the above comment, my grandparents came up with the name " Quakenassee Hollow" before the lodge took it. The lodge is off the end of the airstrip down a trail.
  • I've been there many times. It sits in a beautiful hardwood hammock. The only thing left is the cinder blocks and 2 story fireplace. What was the reason they burned it down?
  • Hi DGarey, although this post is quite old, I just stumbled upon it. I purchased the lodge a few years back, and am completely fascinated with the camps of the Big Cypress, and all of their history. I would love the chance to speak to you about your old camp, and the BC in general. How may I contact you?
  • Michael are you on Facebook?
  • Hi rhoads, I'm not, but my wife is. Are you the rhoads camp?
  • Hey, Michael, yes my family has a camp out there. I remember the Quakenassee sitting vacant for many years and I heard that some group of guys from Broward County recently purchased the lodge.
  • Hi Rhoads, are you referring to the lodge or the camp? To my understanding, the camp was torn down by the park service years ago, although I know the foundation and fireplace still stand. The lodge was purchased by me from the second owner about 4 years ago. Regardless, I'd love to speak to you about the lodge, and camps in general. Are you a member at the Sportsmans Club?
  • My Grandfather spent many a night at the Lodge back in the 70's. I've heard many stories of it. I am not a member, but I will be attending the wildhog bbq this year. Absolutely, I'd love to hear more about it. You can reach me at my e-mail address jvanschaick20@gmail.com.
