Khor Virap

Armenia / Ararat / Lusarat /
monastery, interesting place, Armenian Apostolic church

Khor Virap is located some 30 kilometers south of Yerevan and can be seen as a day trip from there, possible combined with Garni.

The monastery of Khor Virap has a great setting: at the foot of mount Ararat on a bluff that seems to come out of nowhere on the Urartian plain. When you arrive you can buy white doves or pigeons. They are meant to be released signifying the release of Gregory the Illumimnator.

The main sights here are the church of St.Gregory, dating to pre Christian Armenia when it was a Royal prison St Gregory was Imprisoned there for some thirteen years and released after curing the Armenian king who accepted Christianity and made it the national religion.
