A good place to go see the sunset in Tucson. A small scenic vista pullout next to a tight turning road. Watch out for cyclists.

  • Gates pass is less than 5 miles west of Tucson on paved roads. This is a must see drive for those that want a short trip into the Sanora desert. The Sujaro cactus are seen in abudance in a circle drive of less than 20-35 miles. You can either to the West and North thru Marana and I-10 (long route) or South to return to Tucson on Ajo road (short route). If you take the short route you will drive by Tucson Estates where the author lives. Desert views, Sujaro cactus and other desert plants and animals can be see from the road. The sun sets are very exceptional from a park at the top of Gates Pass. A few clouds and clear air make the view one of the wonders of the area. This pass is not open to commercial traffic or trailers over 40-50 feet in length because the road is steep and curvey. Gates pass leads to Old Tucson Studios, the Sanoran Desert Museum and Sanoran Park West. * Old Tucson Studios: Old West theme park and movie location. Events include park entertainment, attractions, and seasonal events, western movie history, and shopping.. * Desert Museum is a collection of plants and annimals that are native to the area. * Sanoran Park East is a National Monument featuring walking trails, ranger tours, and desert landscape. Walks up signal hill give up close views of Petroglyphs. The Petroglyphs are pictures carved into stone.
