The Douglas Building was originally conceived and owned by T.D. Stimson, (1827 - 1898) a lumber entrepreneur who later became one of Los Angeles' leading real estate developers in Los Angeles during the 1890s.

The building was designed in 1898 by San Francisco architects, James and Merritt Reid. Stimson conceived it as a "a new standard" in office buildings. The five-story structure was markedly subdued and modern in comparison to its the majority of the Victorian inspired buildings around it.

Building is now lofts. ACLU of Southern California's first full time lawyers had offices in this building.

Comments

  • Since this was before iron/steel frame construction techniques and before cement and re-bar construction, does anyone know the internal construction of this building?
  • Condopedia.com states that the building core is of stone. A developer in the area tells me it is constructed of iron columns and wood beams. I'd really like to know how this building was designed and constructed.
