Formerly some rather run-down nurses accommodation, these two former Council blocks have been demolished and are being replaced by a large hall of residence for postgraduate students at Imperial College (as the new Winstanley Road campus). When complete in 2012, there will be accommodation for 587 students in two linked buildings, as well as a range of student facilities. The story behind this development is a little unusual - the blocks were previously planned to be sold on the open market, but when the property market slowed, Imperial College - which is based fairly nearby in South Kensington - bought the entire development (which had planning permission but which had not yet started construction), adjusted the size of the flats to make them more suitable for students, added lots of cycle parking, and started building.
