Founded in New Jersey on July 7, 1899 by Jeptha H. Wade II, John D. Rockefeller, William G. Mather, and James R. Sinclair, Great Lakes Towing began full operation on the Great Lakes in 1900 with a roster of over 150 tugboats. Finding ample business on the lakes, the company grew so quickly and gained so much of the ship-assist market share it was charged with operating a monopoly in 1913, though the charges were later dropped. Headquartered in Cleveland since it's inception, the company founded the Great Lakes Shipyard on its property mainly to serve as a construction and maintenance facility for the company's large fleet of tugboats and workboats in the early 1900's, and the yard's first tugs were launched in 1907.
Reaching its peak size in the 1930's and 1940's, the company was faced with severe labor disruptions at the end of the Second World War which prompted Federal involvement to resolve, and like the rest of the Great Lakes saw a marked downturn in business during the 1960's and 70's. Following an executive reshuffling in 1972 and 1973, the company was reformed into the Great Lakes Group, streamlined it's operations and returned to profitability. Now part of a multi-faceted ship assist and line handling operation, the Great Lakes Group is made up of the Great Lakes Towing Company, the Great Lakes Shipyard, Soo Linehandling Services, Inc., Tugz International L.L.C., Puerto Rico Towing & Barge Co. (PRT) and the Admiral Towing and Barge Company which operate in the ship assist and towing fields in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Puerto Rico and Hawaii respectively.
The Great Lakes Shipyard, once the main source of the Great Lakes Towing Company's Fleet continued to operate during it's parent companies troubles, making a respected name for itself as a ship refit and repair facility for private, commercial and government vessels. With the entire Great Lakes Towing Fleet of 1920's and 1930's vintage, the yard has recently returned to new vessel production on the in-house designed 'Handy Size' Tugboat, geared to the near-coastal and harbor ship assist trades.
