Known by various names, the Los Angeles Dam, holds in the waters of the Los Angeles reservoir. During the 1971 'Sylmar' earthquake (referred to by scientist as the San Fernando earthquake), the Van Norman dam was severely damaged. It lost 30 feet of height, when the soil became liquified and flowed into the water. Only through concerted actions, like draining water as fast as possible and heavy equipment work, was a complete failure avoided. This reservoir replaces the Upper and Lower Van Norman Reservoirs. This is a storage location for the water delivered by the Los Angeles Aqueduct. This reservoir is higher in elevation then most of Los Angeles allowing gravity to provide the pressure necessary to deliver water to homes and businesses.
