Atomic Weapons Establishment Lampeter

This former Cold War ROC Monitoring Post was built to monitor blast effects and fallout in the event of a nuclear war. If an attack had taken place, a small team of Royal Observer Corps or UK Warning and Monitoring Organisation volunteers would man the bunker, collecting data and relaying it to ROC Group HQ and the local authorities.

This was one of 6 posts containing seismograph equipment, part of the Ministry of Defence network of seismic stations used in connection with nuclear test ban verification.

Although the Observer Corps was stood down in 1991, the Lampeter Bunker was retained for seismic monitoring purposes. It later fell into disuse, but after a refit in 2009, it now serves again as a seismic monitoring post under the control of the Atomic Weapons Establishment.
