dock (maritime), gravel pit, region, limestone quarry, asphalt plant
Site is man-made fill. Previously known as the Dakota Pier, before that Seaway Terminal No. 3, Before that Hallett Dock Co. #3, and likely many names/companies before that as well. Originally a coal-receiving facility. After the inbound eastern coal trade in the Twin Ports dwindled to almost nothing the dock sat idle for a long time. It's possible it was idle continuously from the 1960s up until the mid-1990s when Northland Constructors, Inc. set up shop here. They use the site to store, ship, receive, and process a number of raw bulk construction materials like sand, gravel, and limestone. Limestone is delivered by self-unloading bulk freighter at the inner end of the slip on the north side of the pier. An asphalt recycling facility is located at the southwest side of the site.
A local marine construction company, Marine Tech, Inc., often has many of its tugs and barges stationed around the pier.
