Kawkhali Upazila (Pirojpur district) with an area of 79.64 sq km is bounded by Nesarabad upazila on the north, Bhandaria and Rajapur upazilas on the south, Jhalokhati sadar and Rajapur upazilas on the east, Pirojpur sadar upazila on the west. Main rivers are Swarupkati, Nalchity, Kaliganga and Katcha.

The location of Kawkhali town is 22.6203°N 90.0694°E. Kawkhali (Town) consists of 3 mouzas. The area of the town is 5.34 sq km. It has a population of 8399; male 53.26%, female 46.74%. The density of population is 1573 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 62.4%. The town has one dakbungalow.

Kawkhali thana, now an upazila, was established in 1912. It consists of 5 union parishads, 45 mouzas and 58 villages.

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census: Population 70346; male 51%, female 49%; Muslim 81.35%; Hindu 18.59% and others 0.06%.
