(UPDATE: Formerly named Gila River Arena. Used to be the home of Arizona Coyotes, which now plays in Tempe, AZ)
Gila River Arena is a sports and entertainment arena located in Glendale, Arizona. The arena is part of the much larger Westgate City Center development. It is home to the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL and was home to the Arizona Sting of the NLL from 2003-2007. The arena opened on December 26, 2003 after being under construction since 2002. The construction cost was $180,000,000. It replaced the America West Arena in Downtown Phoenix as the home of the Arizona Coyotes.
The arena was named the Glendale Arena from 2003 to 2006. In late 2006, Jobing.com signed a 10-year $30,000,000 naming rights deal. In August 2014, the Coyotes terminated their naming rights deal with Jobing.com, and announced a new nine-year naming rights and sponsorship deal with Gila River Casinos, a group of tribal casinos controlled by the Gila River Indian Community.
The arena seats 17,799.
Since 2007, the PBR's Built Ford Tough series bull riding tour has been hosted an annual event in this venue. Beginning in 2005, the Glendale Arena has been host to the Arizona state high school basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and cheerleading tournaments in a mega-event called "February Frenzy" as a result of a formal agreement between the City of Glendale and the Arizona Interscholastic Association.
