Irving Circle Park has been a public park since 1870. It was intended as a Community Centerpiece Park and the original plat stipulations called for a bust of Washington Irving to be placed there, but a date was not set. The bust was placed in the park on September 12, 1936 and was done by William Kriner, a sculptor who had worked on the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The original sculpture stood on the north side of the circle for a mere seven years till it was vandalized and moved to its present location in front of IPS School #57. In the 1970's an iron replica of the statue was erected in the original placement and remains there now.
