The town was named after author Rudyard Kipling, who had made several visits to Canada. During one of Kipling's voyages across Canada he passed through the town of Broadview, which is located north of Kipling. His passing through this town led to Kipling receiving its name. The main initial settlement in the Kipling area took place in the 1890s and the first two decades of the twentieth century.

This is the town where Kyle MacDonald earned a house from a huge trading quest. He started out by trading one red paper clip for a fish pen. 14 trades later he has earned a house in Kipling. Some of the trades included a KISS snow globe, a recording contract, a generator, a Hollywood movie role, and an afternoon with Alice Cooper.
