place with historical importance, estate (manor / mansion land)
This site has a lot of important history for both Deephaven and the development of Lake Minnetonka.
Originally, this region was for weekend getaways from the city, with a rail line ending nearby to deliver holiday tourists. The site of Walden was once the early accomodations of the Harrow Barding House and then the grander Hotel St. Louis resort, built in 1879.
Walter D. Douglas bought the property and built a twenty-seven room country estate by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw in 1909 at the location of the former Hotel Saint Louis. The Douglas family founded the Quaker Oats Company, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His wife named the house after her two sons: Walton and Donald, and the original spelling was "Waldon" but it soon became known as the common spelling of the name Walden. While on his way back from a trip to Europe looking for furniture for Walden, Walter Douglas perished in the Titanic disaster. However his wife Mahala Dutton–Douglas and her French maid Berthe Leroy were survivors. Mahala continued to live at her Waldon mansion until her death in 1945 at age 81.
Last purchased in 05/1987 by Robert D. Furst, Jr. for $760,000. Furst has been a Director of Sentry Technology since its inception. Prior thereto he was a Director of Video Sentry Corporation, our predecessor, from January 1993 until February 1997. He was Chairman of the Board of Video Sentry from July 1996 and Chief Executive Officer from August 1996 until February 1997. Mr. Furst was one of the original shareholders of Video Sentry. He is also a founder and managing principal of Alternative Strategy Advisers LLC, an alternative investment management firm. Mr. Furst is a member of the Chicago Board of Trade and has been a securities and commodities trader since 1980. Mr. Furst is a continuing director on the Board of Directors after the completion of the Dialoc ID Investment.
