San Juan County Road 142

USA / Utah / Moab /
 road, potash mine

This rough-but-maintained dirt road runs from the Potash boat ramp (east of here) to Canyonlands National Park. Its official name---per San Juan County---is San Juan County Road 142 and is signed as such just south of the Potash boat ramp. The upper (western) end contains one-lane breath-taking switchbacks that require full concentration for passing other vehicles and staying on the road. Portions of the road are visible from Dead Horse Point State Park. High-clearance vehicles recommended. Four-wheel drive necessary when road is wet or has wash-outs. The only place on the road that provides access to the river is at the Potash boat ramp. A portion of the road crosses the private property of Moab Salt (called Intrepid Potash as of 2006).

A Great way to enter this part of the park if you have the time. The road was in much better shape 20 years ago. I found out by driving it again in a Honda Accord last year. Very slow, hard but I made it.
