Recently [2012] purchased by the University of Auckland as the site of a new campus. Water falling on Mt Eden moves downwards while being filtered by the volcanic scoria rock and emerges here as spring water. The amount of water was copius and free resulting in several breweries being built here in the 19th century. Foremost of these was the Captain Cook Brewery which was distinguished by a bronze statue of Capt Cook. This statue was imported from Italy in the 1890s by the brewery, it was subsequently discovered that it isn't a statue of Cook, but of an Italian Admiral.
