This was intended as a new senic roadway through the Domain. It was a works relief scheme and was to be named for the centenary of the country (and city) in 1940. The War interrupted the completion of the road. By the time the war was over the need for it was reassessed and it was decided that the introduction of more motorcars into the Domain would destroy its peace & quiet. The drive was eventually laid out as the simple walkway seen today.
