The evening of July 31, 1976, a huge thunderstorm stalled over the Big Thompson Canyon. 12 inches of rain fell in four hours. The volume of the Big Thompson River increased exponentially and with no warning. A 20-foot-high flash flood destroyed the area, and killed 144 people.
