In 1996 a large fire burned 10,400 acres north of Waldo Lake. Between August 23 and 27 a lightning-sparked fire swept the area. The forest was primary mountain hemlock, with some lodgepole pine and true fir. According to Forest Service data, in three-quarters of the burned area, tree mortality exceeded 90%.
