house, interesting place
Here is a residence of Mr. James Stuart Cain, who was eventually the town's principal property owner. Cain moved to Bodie when he was 25, and built what could be called an empire of his own. He started in the lumber business by putting barges on Mono Lake, and transporting timber into Bodie. The same timber that they needed to support the mine shafts that made Bodie what it was.
At one point, Cain and a business partner leased a block of land from the Standard mine and ended up taking $90,000 in gold out of it in just 90 days! When they tried to renew the lease, the mill said no, but later James took control of the mill though court action and went on to be one of the richest men in town.
