The McClure Country Home was built by the McClure family, early farming pioneers who were among Modesto's notable settler families, in the late 1800's. The beautiful home boasts extensive rose gardens originally planted in the early 20th century.
The home and surrounding property was gifted to the City of Modesto for preservation, and can be rented for weddings and events today. The home is not open to the public for general visits and tours, and the property is protected by a caretaker who today resides in a secondary home on the property (once used by the McClure employees). The City of Modesto plans to eventually develop the property into a park or other public area, with tours available similar to those provided at the McHenry Mansion in downtown Modesto. These plans have been complicated by the destruction of the original furnishings for the home, which were stored in the historic John Muir schoolhouse in Modesto, which was tragically destroyed by an arsonist in 2007. Though a few of the original items were furnished, including the McClure piano which crossed the continent in the back of a covered wagon, most of the items related to the property were destroyed.
