Royal Bank/Sommerfeld Block (Saskatoon)

Canada / Saskatchewan / Saskatoon

The two buildings at this site were both built by Paul Sommerfeld in 1912. While the larger building remained primarily rental apartments, the smaller building housed the Royal Bank's Nutana branch for 53 years. The bank is likely best remembered for a rather colourful daytime robbery that took place in 1951 when two armed men stole over $10,000 in cash and led police on a wild chase around town. Another interesting fact is that the first mass of the Nutana Catholic community took place in the basement of the Sommerfeld Block in 1917.

Today the Sommerfeld Block is home to Bud's on Broadway, a bar noted for its live performance by R&B musicians. The old Royal Bank is now the location for the Saskatchewan Craft Council.
