Oldham is a large town 7 miles to the north east of central Manchester.
Traditionally lying within Lancashire, Oldham is now a part of the Greater Manchester conurbation. It was a boom town of the industrial revolution and was once the single most productive cotton spinning mill town in the world.
The Pennine hills and the Yorkshire border lie to the east of the towns edge.
The population of the town is approximately 104,000. The population of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham is about 220,000.
