The Mumbai Main Branch of State Bank of India is one of the most magnificent landmarks in the Fort area of South Mumbai. Today the building of 1924 is a listed Grade II-A Heritage structure of Mumbai. The Mumbai Main Branch traces its origins to the Bank of Bombay which set up its main office at the same place, in 1863. The foundation stone of the said office of the Bank of Bombay was laid by Sir Bartle Frere, the then Governor of Bombay Presidency, with military ceremony. Interestingly, the Bank of Bombay building was the first amongst various buildings to be built around the then Elphinstone Circle which has now come to be known as the Horniman Circle, renamed after Benjamin Horniman, a pro-freedom editor of the Bombay Chronicle.
On 1st July, 1955 the Imperial Bank of India was converted into the State Bank of India by an act of Parliament. The local head office of SBI's immediate predecessor, the Imperial Bank of India, became the Mumbai Main Branch of the State Bank in 1972.
