Robert H. Treman, Cornell University Class of 1878, built his family estate on University Hill, just west of today's West Campus. Treman hired his friend Warren Manning, a pioneer of American landscape architecture, to design the site. It was to be "left to nature as the best gardener." Much of his west lawn grew into the Redbud Woods, which over time became perceived as a buffer between the University and the surrounding community.

Until 1970, this remained largely untouched. In 1970, Cornell University proposed the construction of a parking lot over much of the wooded area but after much protest, desisted. Once again, in 2005 there were actions made to remove the last stands of the Redbud Woods. This time, although with much controversy and protest the University moved forward with their plans in constructing the current parking lot.
