Situated at roughly the halfway point between the LVRR shops at Sayre and the rail terminus at Buffalo, the Manchester Yard of the LVRR became a freight classification interchange, crew change point, refueling, watering and coaling point on the LVRR during the railroads steam operations. After dieselization in 1951 the site remained a major freight and crew interchange for both the LVRR Mainline to/from Buffalo and New York as well as a hub for freight and power moving on the nearby branch lines. At its height, the yard and its facilities employed several hundred local workers and had a dedicated engine maintenance facility and thirty-bay, 62000sq ft roundhouse.

Waning business on the LVRR closed the yard as a classification point in 1969 and crew reductions brought the end of crew change operations in 1972, with LVRR eventually going under in 1976. Conrail took over the yard and roundhouse thereafter, but only used a small portion through 1981 before abandoning the facility altogether. It has since been subdivided and is slated for further development.
