The Interessengebiet (pretty much meaning "zone of interest") KL Auschwitz was established by the German Nazi administration as a restricted area to keep word of the ghastly (and officially secret) activities at Auschwitz from leaking out. Many civilian Poles were evacuated and the territory was appropriated by the occupying Germans. The area includes the Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II Birkenau death camps ---plus several satellite concentration camps including Plawy, Harmensee, Budy, and Rajsko.
