Constructed in the 17th through 19th centuries.
The house was owned by Aleksandr Talyzin and later Count A. G. Tolstoy.

From 1848-1852, Nikolai Gogol occupied several rooms here. In this building he wrote the second volume of Dead Souls and then burned them shortly before his death. Here he was visited by other writers including S. T. and I. S. Aksakov, A. I. Turgenev, A. N. Ostrovsky, G. P. Danilevsky and others.

In 1979 three rooms became a memorial museum to the writer.
