This was the location of Waltons Ford and one of the only crossing site into the Georgia frontier from S.C. after the Revolution.Soilders like Jessie Walton, Col.Early Cleveland, and James Wyly were given land grants for their service. Walton was killed by a Creek indian raiding party nere the site of Travelers Rest Inn. Walton should have gotten more credit for founding towns than Daniel Boone. Walton founded Jonesborough Tenn before moving his family here and founding Walton's Ford. His cabin site and grave in now lost under Lake Hartwell.
This area including what is now called Toccoa was known as Walton's Ford until the 1890's.
Walton's family later sold the land to Devereaux Jarrett and he built an empire in this area with several grist mills, an inn/tavern, slaves, toll ford/bridge and farming his vast land holdings. The bridge is now gone but when the water is low piles of rock can still be seen.
