River Ulasi

The Ulasi river starts from a source in Dikenafai, Imo State, flowing west through Ezinifite, Ananbra State, Lilu, Azia, Ukpor, Ihembosi, and Okija. Ubu river, a tributary with its source at Nnewi, passing through Nza-Ozubulu and Ihembosi where it joined Ulasi River, is said to have chased Ulasi off her territory to avoid the drowning of her children. Ulasi takes a left turn at Ozubulu rather than continue straight on its westerly course through Ogbaru. A course that would have taken it to empty its water into the river Niger. After the turn at Ozubulu, Ulasi River continues to flow south through Okija, Ihiala, Uli and Uguta. At Uguta, it picks up volume and speed with the extra flow from Njaba River via Uguta Lake before flowing parallel to the River Niger. It was earlier believed that Ulasi, due to its westerly direction from its source, discharges into the River Niger at Umunankwo/Ogbaru. However, Ulasi changed courses severally creating meanders but continued southerly. At some point, the name changed, due to dialetic pronounciation, to Ulashi. Hence it continued its flow as River Ulashi through Obiakpo, Ebocha, Omoku, Ukodu (bayelsa State), Mbiama. Urashi takes another left at Okarki, flowing east and then south-east to Egbama and Agunughan but more southerly into Orashi National Forest where at Egbema it split.
