Sap means Snake and Nala means Canal or Channel. This area was a low lying marshy land mass during nineteenth century. When the first ever civic body of the town was formed by British rulers in the year 1872 as "Station Committee" all the members of the body were British Officers. The civic body was upgraded as town committee and then as municipality. In the early twentieth century years, the first ever Indian Chairman of the municipality was elected. He was none other than Kamini Kumar Chanda, a great son of the country. He planned to make this place as a beautiful park with a lake.. A snake-like lake was made and the excavated soil was used to fill up the low lands around. A beautiful garden was made by the side of the snake channel or "Sapnala" A children play area was also made, which was named as GandhiBag, after the assassination of Mohandas Karam chand Gandhi. At present most of the land is being used for various social and cultural purposes, and the beauty of Sapnala is gone. A memorial tomb has been constructed on the bank of Sapnala in memory of the Language martyrs of 1961, who laid their lives at Silchar Railway station on Police firing.
