Oak Tree Heath is a remnant of a much larger area of heathland located within the Internationally famous Forest of Sherwood. The Royal Hunting Forest, was well visited by many Kings & Queens of England over the centuries and if you ignore the houses around Oak Tree Heath, you could almost be back to that time! The Forest was a mosaic of habitats including wood pasture, acid grassland and heathland which were found alongside the oak birch woodlands and local people grazed their animals on some of the open land whilst the King could chase deer across them.

Since the 1920's, much of the heathland of Nottinghamshire has been lost due to agriculture, forestry, mining and urban sprawl. The areas of heathland left are vitally important for wildlife that is often only found there, so it is really important to take good care of them and try to expand and link them together wherever possible.
