Pitt Street Methodist Church (Auckland, NZ)

New Zealand / Auckland / Auckland, NZ

Gothic building from 1866 by local architect Philip Herepath. The stone detailing was carved by Anton Teutonberg, a prussian artisan who had arrived in Auckland in 1866. As he worked on these items at the same time as working on the High Court in Waterloo Quadrant, these carved heads may be the earliest sculptures by a european in New Zealand. In 1962 a modernist porch was added to the designs of thearchitect Milton Spurdle Annebelle of the firm Annebelle & Hole. Annebelle also reorganised and modernised the interior of the church designing new fittings including a Pulpit, Altar and Font in native timber, light fittings and a new housing for the edwardian pipe organ.
