St. Kuriakose Orthodox Church, Koratty is revered as one of the prominent churches under Cochin Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The church is situated at Chirangara in Thrissur District of Kerala, India. The present christian community in Chirangara is the descendants of Christians converted directly by St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, who came to India in A.D. 52.
St. Thomas reached Kerala in AD 52 and started preaching the gospel. He founded 8 churches, which are called ‘Ezhara Pallikal’, meaning seven and half churches. These were at Kodungallur, Kollam, Niranam, Nilackal (Chayal), Kokkamangalam, Kottakkayal (Paravoor), Palayoor (Chattukulangara) and Thiruvithamkode (the half church).
This church was established in 1950 by late H.G. Paulose Mar Severios as a chapel in the name of St. Mary. The church was later renovated by H.G. Yuhanon Mar Severios and blessed by H.H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews-I on 5th May 1990.
Koratty St. Kuriakose Orthodox Church and Sion Seminary founder late His Grace Poulose Mar Severios was a grate devotee of St. Kuriakose and started many churches in that saints name like St. Kuriakose Orthodox Church Koratty.
