Essentially constructed by Catherine de Medicis and Louis XIV, it is the founding element in the Historical Axis of Paris, the Tuileries Palace was the Parisian residence of French sovereigns, the house of the Revolutionary Committee and the seat of the "Convention Nationale". It was the center of French government from 1789 to 1870. Burnt down during "la Commune" on May 23, 1871, it was completely demolished by the French government a few months later, with the promise that they wouold rebuild the palace. It
