Everett Alvarez High School will support students in the development and improvement of personal and academic skills in an environment of trust, respect, and care. Students will be actively engaged through fun and inquisitive learning experiences from the classroom to the library, and from the playing fields to the cummunity at large. Students will focus on potenial career paths so their learling is connected to their future success. EVERETT ALVAREZ SCHOOL PROFILE

Everett Alvarez High School is a comprehensive four-year high school, located in the northeast section of Salinas, CA. It was named in honor of Everett Alvarez, a local war hero. He was the first US pilot shot down during the Vietnam War and was a prisoner of war from August 1964 until February 1973.

Everett Alvarez is one of four comprehensive high schools and one continuation school in the Salinas Union High School District. There are four middle schools in the district as well.

Everett Alvarez opened in 1994 and the facility is among the finest in the county. The permanent buildings plus additional portables house approximately 2100 students. The school includes a gymnasium, cafeteria, four computer labs, soccer, and baseball and football fields situated on approximately 40 acres.

Everett Alvarez has many programs that support student learning and success. In 2001 it earned an official AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school certification. AVID is a program that targets "middle range" students and helps them prepare for college. The PUENTE program is another program that helps bridge students to the UC campuses.

Everett Alvarez provides rich curriculum that includes but is not limited to Advanced Placement (AP) courses, Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), Regional Occupation Program (ROP), International Agribusiness Academy, Technology Academy, three foreign languages (Spanish, French and Japanese).

Parents are key when it comes to education so Everett Alvarez High has a variety of venues in which parents can get involved such as, "Eagles in Flight," a parent group that provides the Sober Graduation activity in June, the Parents Club that supports extracurricular activities, School Site Council and the ELAC committee.

There are a total of 88 teachers, 65 of whom are fully credentialed, 23 are on an Emergency credential and 1 with a waiver. In addition to teachers there are 3 assistant principals, 3 counselors, 5 academic counselors, 1 librarian, 1 psychologist and 1 speech therapist.


In the 2006-2007 School year Alvarez was named Most Violent School in Salinas.
