  • Back in the 60's a Morman girl drowned in a fatal tubing accident. That's how it got the name.
  • The lake was named back in the late 1800's. On the southern side there was a campground/layover area that was run by a Mormon group. This is now the approximate place where the Mormon Lake Lodge now sits. The tubing accident is a crock. Look at maps made in the 40's and 50's and they clearly show it as Mormon Lake. The Riordan Museum in Flagstaff has many references to the lakes name going back to when Flagstaff itself, was a tiny stopover. There is still a large Mormon following in the area. I grew up in that area and to my knowledge there was never a fatality on the lake. It always has been and still is very shallow. You can still walk across it.
