A deep concrete capped shaft sits amongst the trees on the bank above the old Eastern United buildings ....this colliery was in operation long before Eastern was established and the shaft was subsequently used in the working of the later Eastern United. Unfortunately the shaft 'has the 'attention' of the Coal Authority and will probably be filled sometime during 2010.

  • Walmers Shaft has now sadly been filled and completely obliterated by the Coal Authority. Whilst I fully understand the matter of Health and Safety I do think a great opportunity for Tourism and Heritage is being completely lost as these old mines are destroyed.
