Second World War Wellington bomber base, built 1940. After the war, the airfield was the RAF Pershore Advanced Flying Training School.

Vulcan bombers were later based here, and is said to have one of the longest runways in UK. It is still in commission and is currently extensively used for training purposes by military special forces and police.

There were recently government proposals to turn the airfield into a reception centre for illegal immigrants, but it was successful campaigned against by local people.

  • Following 'square bashing' at the end of 1951 I was posted to the Police Training School at RAF Pershore but early in 1952 the Police Training School was transferred to RAF Netheravon near Salisbury. My memory regarding the reason this is vague but I still believe that the arrival of the Vulcan at Pershore was the reason. Can anyone help?
  • RAF Pershore never had Vulcan bombers permanently based there, however it was completely combat ready and was one of a number of "non operational" bases which in the event of war would have received two or four Vulcans complete with nuclear weapons ready to strike targets in Eastern Europe. For this reasons Vulcans did visit regularly but all of them were based in Eastern England.
