Delos Archaeological Museum

Greece / Kiklades / Mikonos /

Artifacts retrieved from Delos, which illustrate its importance as a religious and cultural center of Greece. It contains most of the antiquities found in excavations on the island: monumental statues of young men and women, stelae, reliefs, masks, and ancient jewelry.

  • Do you think it right to describe Delos as the ``political capital''? It was the religious centre all right, but its political significance was negligible. (Except that the treasury of the Delian league was located there and not in Athens, which was the true political centre.)
  • Small Island. Be sure to take water and food. There is no water or food to be bought. be sure to wear comfertable shoes there is a lot of walking.
  • Yes bring your own food and water but be very aware that there are no bathrooms on the island. The only bathrooms are on the transport boat that takes you there.
  • Delos was A religious centre not THE religious centre of ancient Greece. Other significant centres were Delphi, Dodone and Cape Mykale. Significance of Delos rised in 1st Athenian Alliance, in which it was the seat of alliance thesaurus (treasure deposit), but in the 2nd Athenian alliance thesaurus moved in Athens itself.
  • The historical comments above are all valid. One must also take into account the fluidity of the past. Ancient Greek culture was not static. Alliances shifted, power centers rose and fell, cities and cult centers that dominated in one era were all but forgotten in another. Delos was no different. It's also important to note that most of the most impressive remains on the island date from the Roman era, especially the many fine mosaic floors. BTW...has anyone else gotten really, really seasick on the little caiques from Mykonos? Oh my, was my face ever blue! Especially on the return trip in the afternoon when the swells were humongous! :P
