A vertical-lift railroad bridge, it was opened in 1966 and was operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, and Conrail prior to its takeover by Norfolk Southern in 1998. The bridge is normally left "opened" for free passage of ships and is usually active at night.
