Vlamertinghe was just within range of the German artillery during the war, despite this, units of Allied heavy artillery and Field Ambulances occasionally stationed there headquarters here. The cemetery itself was opened in May 1915 and is named after the Hop Store which still stands nearby, the cemetery whilst built on the safe side of the village, was always destined to remain small; due to its position between a hedge and the Hop Store building. Also, the site was very wet and marshy and early in 1917 it was necessary for the area to be drained by the Royal Engineers.
