Covering over 9.2 hectares along more than a kilometre of the Manchester Ship Canal's western bank, the reserve now safeguards a mixed landscape of wetland, woods, water features & open land. It includes a designated Site of Biological Importance. The reserve has been designed to encourage a wide range of outdoor pursuits including bird watching, walking, cycling, picknicking and traditional games. The site is owned by United Utilities.
