On this stretch of Market, one of the saddest sights is Albert Pissis and William Moore's beautifully proportioned deserted masterpiece, the Hibernia Bank at the corner of Market, McAllister, and Jones. Pissis and Moore used only the most expensive materials in the building, which has granite exterior walls with an interior of marble, wrought iron, bronze, and mahogany. The building was gutted in 1906, then rebuilt, and became the headquarters of the police chief for a time.
