Opened in 2002 to relieve Loudoun Valley High School, Harmony was originally attended by 8th and 9th grades and was called an "Intermediate" school, rather than a middle school. The county's intention was for the school to be temporary, used until a new high school opened in Purcellville, but has since been converted to the county's standard 6th-8th grade middle school format.
