M/V Cape Orlando (AKR-2044)

USA / California / Alameda /
 military, ship, United States Navy

Laid down in 1981 as the commercial ro-ro cargo ship M/V Finneagle at Kockums Varv Shipyard A,B. in Malmo, Sweden, this ship plied the commercial trades for two years before she was turned over for operation with the US Department of Transportation in 1983.

After a further ten years hauling both commercial and US Government cargoes across the world's oceans, the ship was passed to the MARAD National Defense Reserve Fleet's Ready Reserve Force (RRF) and was renamed the M/V Cape Orlando (AKR-2044). Presently layberthed in ROS-10, meaning she can be made ready for deployment in 10 days or less, the Cape Orlando now operates as one of the Military Sealift Command's 31 Roll-on/Roll-off ships in the Sealift Program Office.
