Villa Nuova / Maplewood Mansion Site

USA / Virginia / Pimmit Hills / Old Springhouse Road, 7676
house, place with historical importance, demolished, interesting place, historical layer / disappeared object

7676 Old Springhouse Road.

This is the former location of Villa Nuova (aka Maplewood), the Second Empire style Mansion built 1873-1874. "The Big Barn" stood where the baseball diamond is now located. The Old Springhouse of "Old Springhouse Road" was also on the property.

Wee bit of a scandal here-- Maplewood Manor was hastily demolished in good condition by the owner in 1970. Reason given was the house was "too drafty," but the generally accepted reason for the demolition was to avoid proposed historic landmark status which would have prevented the sale and development of the land.

I recall my parents sad reaction when it disappeared, virtually overnight. It was a marvelous example of a bygone era and it was a breath taking sight to behold. I think the greedy owner could and should have parsed out the acreage and donated the home as a tax write-off.
