The Historic village of Great Bardfield dates back to at least the 11th century and possibly earlier. Once famous for its annual horse fair, which ran from 1292 until the outbreak of the Great War, the village was famous for the group of Bardfield artists who moved here. Thousands of visitors used to attend the annual Open House Exhibitions of such artists as Rotherstein, Bawden and Ravilious.
Within easy distance of London and Stansted airport, although well of the flight path, the village is graced with numerous timber-framed buildings, the earliest dating back to the 13th century. There are some 50 listed buildings.
