This is a lagoon, in Hancock park. It was a place where tar was excavated, and now it's full of water, with oil and tar floating on the top, and natural gas bubbling up.

  • Thousands upon thousands of Pleistocene animals died in these tar lagoons. Covered by a thin layer of water, the animals would wade in, get stuck, and perish. A bane for them, a boon for us in the form of fantastically-preserved skeletal remains and assemblages of animal remains who lived concurrently.
