Located in Virginia's Rockingham County, which is the former "Turkey Capital of the World" (and still a leading producer), these distinctive long low structures on production-farms are meant to house tens of thousands of live chickens or turkeys. This type of poultry barn replaced the shorter 1940's-60's barns which sometimes had two stories ---which themselves replaced the farmers' backyard henhouse sheds as large-scale production farming gradually replaced small-batch poultry enterprises.
